The problem

Most owners face this with a checklist and a guess.

Closing a business is one of the biggest financial decisions you will make. The wrong order, an unpaid CRA account or a payout to shareholders too early can follow you personally.

You see only the filings

Most guides list forms. They do not show what each way of closing leaves you with, or what you could still owe.

The risks are personal

Directors can be personally liable for some unpaid CRA amounts, and personal guarantees do not end with the business.

The pieces are split

Your accountant, lawyer and bank each see a part. Nobody puts it in order for you.

How it works

Three steps, a few minutes.

Tell us about your business

Corporation or other, province, employees, debts and assets. Rough numbers are fine.

See your options and flags

Which routes may be open, a rough after-tax range, and the red flags that apply to you.

Who we are, and who we are not

Your accountant and lawyer stay in charge of the licensed work.

We are consultants and coordinators. We assess your situation, set out the options, prepare briefs and documents for your professionals, and coach you through it. We are not a law firm, an accounting firm or an insolvency trustee. When your situation needs one, we say so. We neither pay nor accept referral fees.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is this legal advice?

No. CloseMyBusiness.ca provides information and prepared documents for professional review. Your accountant and lawyer give the advice that needs a licence.

How long does it take?

The free check takes a few minutes. A full closing takes longer and depends on your situation; the CRA clearance certificate alone can take months.

What if I owe the CRA?

The check flags it early. Directors can be personally liable for certain unpaid amounts, so talk to your accountant, and to a licensed insolvency trustee if you cannot pay.

Can I use it if my business stopped years ago?

Yes. Stopping operations is not the same as closing, and many owners are in this position.

Do you work with my accountant?

Yes. We prepare a brief that tells your accountant what to request and in what order.

Is my information private?

Everything you tell us is confidential. We share it only on your written instruction or if a subpoena or court order requires it. It is not legally privileged.
